Callino Quartet are to play in Fota House

A treat is in store for all music lovers when the internationally famous Callino Quartet plays at Fota House at 8.00 p.m. on Saturday, 6th October, 2007.
According to Michael Dewan of the Irish Times “The Callino Quartet is now by a long shot, the most polished string quartet that Ireland has recently produced.”
The Quartet comprises Sarah Sexton, first violin, Michaela Girardi, second violin, Rebecca Jones, viola and Sarah McMahon, cello. They will play a programme of Beethoven, Kurtag and Mendelssohn.
The Callino Quartet was formed in June 1999 following a critically acclaimed appearance at the West Cork Chamber Festival. Their own annual Festival now takes place over the Easter Weekend in Bantry. They regularly broadcast on Lyric FM and BBC Radio 3 and were awarded a special prize at the 2002 Paulo Borciani String Quartet Competition for their performance of Haydn. They have commissioned and premiered a number of new works by well-known composers.
The Callino Quartet take their name from the Irish air “Cailin cois tSuir a me” which means Girl by the River Suir. This song was the first Irish air to be notated and became known as the Callino manuscript.
