Programme
Henry Purcell Sweeter than Roses,
realised by Benjamin Britten
Franz Schubert Auf dem Strom op.119
Gabriel Faure Claire de lune op. 46, no.2
Lydia
Nell op.18. no.1
Benjamin Britten Canticle II, op.51 – Abraham and Isaac
Notes:
- The programme opens with the song ‘Sweeter than Roses’ by the seventeenth century English composer, Henry Purcell, in a realisation by Benjamin Britten.
- This will be followed by an infrequently heard work by the Austrian born composer, Franz Schubert, which deserves to be performed more often. ‘Auf dem Strom’ is a text set for voice with piano and, in the original score, horn in E. The horn part today will be taken by ‘cello.
- Next come three gems of the French art-song repertoire by Gabriel Faure:
Claire de lune; Lydia; and Nell.
- Finally, probably a first for Fota House, a performance of Benjamin Britten’s Canticle II for alto, tenor and piano. This is a dramatic re-telling of the Old Testament story of Abraham and Isaac, in a musical form. This work was first performed by Kathleen Ferrier, Peter Pears and the composer in 1952.
ROBERT CRAIG – Tenor
Robert Craig enjoys an active career in North America and Europe, singing at many distinguished festivals and concert series, in performances ranging from recitals and chamber music to oratorio and opera. Since moving to Cork in 1997, he has taught at the Cork School of Music and has performed throughout the Republic of Ireland.
NICHOLAS MCMURRY – Countertenor
Nicholas McMurry is a rising young singer whose exceptionally wide range and musical intelligence have set him apart from many of the new generation of Irish performers. He has received degrees from Trinity College, Dublin and University College, Cork and currently studies singing at the Cork School of Music.
JEAN SCANNELL and GERARD MOYNIHAN are both on the teaching staff of the Cork School of Music. Both have wide experience, particularly in the chamber music field. Joan was recently awarded a Master’s degree for performance by the Cork School of Music (C.I.T.). Gerard particularly enjoys working with singers.
