Martin Kiely of House Works who will give a presentation on Kitchens. A shipwright/boatbuilder by trade, once qualified Martin manufactured and installed fitted furniture all over Munster. He runs the HouseWorks showroom supplying high-end interior products which include SieMatic, Rolf Benz, Wackenhut and Kettnaker.

Daphne Potter Cogan has worked as an Interior Design Consultant for the last twenty five years. She has extensive experience working in both private houses and the commercial sector and has built up a solid reputation and a team of specialists in making up fitting and restoring soft furnishings.

David Cahill set up his own Company “Spa Lighting Studio” five years ago. His specialist team provides lighting solutions for high specification interior and exterior restaurant, bar leisure, entertainment and retail projects.

On Saturday, 18th October 2008, an Interior Design Seminar entitled “Inspirations and Ideas for your Home” will be held at Fota House. Well known for Classical Concerts, Musical evenings, Gardening Seminars and many more, this is the first Interior Design Seminar to be held at Fota.

Attention all Gardeners and would-be Gardeners!

On Saturday, 27 September 2008, the sixth bi-annual Gardening Seminar will be held at Fota House. These Garden Seminars have all been extremely popular and many have been well oversubscribed.

The morning will be devoted to lectures by such eminent Gardeners as Hester Forde from Coosheen Garden, Glounthaune, whose presentation is entitled “Autumn Glory”. Oliver Schurmann from Mount Venus Nursery in Dublin, and winner of the Gold award at Bloom, will discuss “Fascinating Gardens”, while Jim and Val Dennison from Phoenix Garden, Co. Limerick will talk about “Inspirations, Imaginings and Ideas, How a Garden is formed”. In the afternoon (for those who want to stay on for the day) a complimentary guided walk will take place through the Arboretum and beautiful Gardens of Fota. During the Seminar, four specialist nurseries will be on site to sell rare plants.

Registration for the Seminar begins at 9.00 and the first speaker is Hester Forde. After tea/coffee and scones, Oliver Schurmann will take the floor while Jim and Val Dennison will follow at 12.30.

Rare Plants will be on sale from Gerry Harford from Camolin Potting Shed, Hester Forde, Oliver Schurmann of Mount Venus Nursery and Finlay Colley of Rare Plants Ireland.

The cost of the Seminar is €50.00. Lunch in the Cafe at Fota House is optional, and is not included in the price, while the afternoon walk, conducted by well-known gardener Brian Cross, is complimentary

At 8:00pm on Wednesday, July 30, 2008, historic Fota House will host a concert by a leading U.S. choir, The Peachtree Road Chancel Choir from Atlanta, Georgia. All profits from the concert will go towards the ongoing restoration of Fota House. The event promises to offer glorious music in a beautiful setting.

The choir, under the direction of Mr. Scott Atchison, and accompanied by the Finlay String Quartet, will perform a varied programme of sacred music. Pieces in the concert include Mozart’s Missa Brevis , works by Handel, Palestrina and Purcell as well as music by American composers and spirituals from the American South.

The Peachtree Road Chancel Choir has performed across the United States, including appearances at Carnegie Hall in New York and the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. They have also toured in England, France, Germany and Austria, singing in a number of prestigious venues. Each year, the choir takes part in a concert series in Atlanta, singing at least two major choral works each season. They are considered one of the finest choirs in the southern United States.

The Cork-based chamber music ensemble “Beyond the Pale” will perform in Fota House on Wednesday July 9th at 8pm.

Founded in 2006 by four musicians with a shared interest in the music of the baroque era, “Beyond the Pale” have played concerts in Ireland and abroad, including at the East Cork Early Music Festival and the West Wycombe Arts Festival in 2007.

This will be the second appearance of “Beyond the Pale” in Fota House, following a successful concert in June 2007….A delightfully inventive, highly attractive programme of music that was perfectly in tune with the surroundings was the consensus view of all who heard the very talented group, Beyond the Pale, at Fota House (Irish Examiner June 9th 2007).

This year’s concert will feature music of the 17th century from Italy, Ireland and England, with composers including Castello, Frescobaldi, Corelli, Purcell and others. “Beyond the Pale” are Marja Tuhkanen (Baroque Violin), Conor O’Connell (Recorders), Ilse de Ziah (Baroque Cello) and James Taylor (Harpsichord).

Minister Gormley visits Fota House

Fota House were delighted to have Minister Gormley visit First Irish Heritage Trust Property, Fota House, Arboretum & Gardens.

Mr John Gormley, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, today (21 April 2008) visited Fota House, Arboretum & Gardens and paid tribute to the Irish Heritage Trust’s achievements at Fota since it took over responsibility for the property just over three months ago.
Minister Gormley was visiting the first property of the Irish Heritage Trust and viewing the wonderful collection of Irish art which opened to the public today. The collection includes seven 18th and 19th century Irish landscape paintings which were recently donated by the McCarthy family, active in Cork business and cultural life. This milestone represents the first major donation to the Irish Heritage Trust by private individuals. A second important collection has also been acquired for Fota – original Smith Barry family contents of Fota House. This collection comprises seven portraits, fourteen prints and four engravings. In addition, Sir Hugh Smith Barry’s Deputy Lieutenant’s Uniform from the late 19th century has been generously donated by an anonymous benefactor.

“I would like to congratulate the Irish Heritage Trust for achieving its first critical goal in securing the acquisition of Fota House, Arboretum and Gardens in December last year,” said Minister Gormley at Fota House. “I firmly believe that heritage properties must be cared for and opened up for the public to enjoy. Fota House is one of the most important houses of its period in Ireland and its conservation and sensitive development, with its architectural heritage and details fully intact, must be a priority. Apart from enriching the lives of local people, this will also provide employment and tourism opportunities in local communities around the country,” he added.

“We are very grateful to the Minister and the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government for their continued support, particularly the recent announcement to invest €1.5 million in Fota House,” said David Davies, Chairman of the Irish Heritage Trust. “Since January there has been tremendous activity around the property as well as local support and goodwill. These are exciting yet challenging times for the Trust and we have great plans to reinvigorate this special property and contribute to prosperity in this part of Cork,” he concluded.

The €1.5 million will go towards essential roof repairs and more importantly, bringing the upper floors back into public use. These works will be completed by the end of the year. Other improvements include the renovation of the Fota café which is underway and will re-open in June to welcome the summer visitors.

In the meantime, the new ‘Family Fun at Fota’ events programme for children supported by the Heritage Council has started successfully. Approximately 500 children and their families have already enjoyed Easter and cookery events at the property. It is hoped that everyone will continue to come to Fota to have fun learning about and celebrating this wonderful place. This events programme will run until the end of August, culminating in an art competition during Heritage Week.

Spend a ‘Heavenly’ Evening at Fota House
on Thursday, 22nd May at 8.00 p.m.

On Thursday, 22nd May, 2008, Gerald Peregrine, one of Ireland’s leading young musicians, will give a concert at Fota House as part of a tour to promote his first commercial CD ‘Heavenly’.

Gerard, the youngest member of a well known Irish musical family, began studying violin at the age of three but quickly fell in love with the cello and started cello lessons at the age of six.

Since completing his studies at leading music conservatoires in London and Indiana (as a prestigious Fulbright scholar) Gerald has been performing as a soloist and chamber musician both at home and abroad. Highlights have included performances at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival as well as recitals in France, London, Portugal, Spain, Italy and around Ireland.

He has made many broadcasts for RTE and BBC radio and is a member of Camerata Ireland, performing extensively in Europe and America. Gerald has made several concerto performances with the RTE NSO and the RTE Concert Orchestra. In 2003, Gerald gave the prestigious NCH debut recital to critical acclaim.

He is a Music Network Artist and also plays with the well-known trio ‘Ensemble Avalon’. He is Artist in Residence at Limerick University and is section leader of the Orchestra of the National Concert Hall.

2007 saw the release of his first commercial CD ‘Heavenly’, a collection of popular jazz standards. For all music lovers, this is an evening not to be missed.

Fota House International Concert Series

Irish Classical Guitarist Redmond O’Toole performs nationwide concert tour promoting his new album

On Wednesday 7th May 2008, International Classical Guitarist Redmond O’Toole performs at Fota House as part of his nationwide Concert Tour.

Redmond O’Toole has been hailed as one of the most exciting and individual guitarists in Europe. He plays a specially designed 8-string guitar in the position of a cello that has enabled him to extend the capabilities of the guitar.

Redmond became the first ever Irish guitarist to gain entry to the Academia Chigiana in Siena where he studied with Maestro Oscar Ghiglia. He has given concerts throughout Europe and in Brazil, Mexico and the Caribbean. Redmond recently caught the attention of the Chieftains who invited him to play with the group at a number of events including the opening of last year’s Belfast Festival. In the coming summer he will perform with the Dutch soprano Charlotte Reidijk at the prestigious Bantry House Festival and several double concertos with Cora Venus Lunny and the Miro Chamber Orchestra.

His concerts will include music from his new CD alongside pieces by Rodrigo, Brouwer, Kolshkin and Torroba.

On Thursday, 10th April, Amanda Neri, Mezzo Contralto, will present “Printemps Qui Commence”, an Evening of Song, at 8.00 p.m.
Amanda, who first performed at Fota in October 2006 returns for the third time by popular demand and this is the first time she has given a Solo Recital. Amanda studies singing at the Cork School of Music with Mary MacSweeney and has many solo performances to her name, most notably with Cara O’Sullivan at St. Finbarres Cathedral where they sang Rossini’s” Petite Messe Solenelle”. It is said of Amanda, “Cork has never before produced a contralto of such natural talent”.

On Saturday, 5th April, Amy Prendergast, Recorders and Mary Mulcahy, Soprano, supported by James Taylor, Harpischord and Conor O’Connell, Recorders, will give a Lunchtime Recital of Eighteenth Century Cantatas.
Starting at 12.30, the recital will be followed by Lunch in Fota House. Amy Prendergast was the recipient of the Douglas Gunn Recorder Award 2006 and is currently enrolled in the Master’s Programme in Performance as well as teaching recorder and drama in the Cork School of Music. Mary Mulcahy has performed extensively throughout Ireland and Europe giving song recitals of music from a variety of genres and styles. James Taylor and Conor O’Connell are members of the extremely popular Baroque Ensemble ‘Beyond the Pale’.

Family Fun at Fota

28 February 2008: The Irish Heritage Trust today launched ‘Family Fun at Fota’ - an exciting discovery and educational programme for children which will take place at Fota House, Arboretum & Gardens from March to September this year.

Family Fun at Fota will focus on heritage education for children and is being generously supported by the Heritage Council with a grant under the 2008 Local Heritage Grant Scheme.

Starting with an Easter Egg Trail on Easter Saturday and culminating in an art competition during Heritage Week in late August, children can learn about cultural heritage in their local community and will be encouraged to develop an appetite for caring for heritage at an early age.

“Fota is a special place and it’s important for the Trust that everyone has the chance to come and enjoy discovering what it has to offer.” said Kevin Baird, CEO of the Irish Heritage Trust. “Whether children are cooking in the wonderfully restored kitchen and scullery, telling stories or potting plants, we want to give them memorable days out with their families and the chance to learn about the significance of Fota and heritage in general,” he added.

The programme of events encourages discovery and active participation. “Cooking in the Past” in the old kitchen with local food historian Regina Sexton will involve children cooking and tasting a number of 19th century dishes. “KinderGardening” and “Tree Trails” with enthusiastic ecologist Dale Treadwell will involve planting wildflower seeds, potting oak seedlings and tree bark rubbing activities.

Entertaining storyteller Seán O’Laoghaire will transport children’s imaginations back to the time of Fota’s early days and bring these stories to life. Seán will then lead art workshops where children will prepare their entries for the Art Competition which takes place during Heritage Week. The Art Competition is open to local primary and secondary schools - children are invited to enter art which depicts their interpretation of Fota House, Arboretum & Gardens. The art will be exhibited at Fota House during Heritage Week from 29th August – 1st September and photos of the winners’ artwork will be published on the Irish Heritage Trust Website.

These events are suitable for 7-12 year olds and parents are encouraged to participate.

The Easter Egg Trail on Saturday 22nd March and Heritage Discovery Trail to be launched on Saturday 24th May are open to children of all ages.

How to get to Fota House

Fota House is situated on Fota Island which is 10km east of Cork City. To get to Fota Island take the N25 east from Cork City for about 7km and then exit the N25 heading for Cobh/Carrigtwohill on the R624. Fota Island is about 2.5km on the right. Follow the signs to Fota House.
Fota Island can also be reached by train. The journey from Cork takes only fifteen minutes. Train timetables can be found online on www.irishrail.ie
